The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland installs Edward Malesic as the 12th bishop in a special mass in downtown St. John & # 39; s Cathedral. (You can watch a live stream of the ceremony here.)

Appointed by Pope Francis in July, Malesic will take over the role recently vacated by Nelson Perez, who was named Archbishop of Philadelphia after less than three years in Cleveland. Malesic, 60, is from Harriburg, Penn. There he was ordained a priest for the first time in 1987.

The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland has 675,000 Catholics in eight counties. It is much larger than the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, where Malesic has been a bishop for five years.

Malesic has an Ohio connection for boating. As early as the 1980s he attended the seminar program at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1983 and a Master of Divinity in 1987.
